In 2012, during a regular patrol in Afghanistan, something terrible happened to Lucca. She got hurt by a bomb and lost one of her front legs. But even though she was hurt, she didn’t give up.
Honoring Lucca’s Service
Sgt. Chris Willingham, Lucca’s handler, recalls her bravery vividly. He credits her for ensuring his safe return home. Lucca had a talent for spotting dangerous items, and thanks to her, their patrols never resulted in any injuries.
This week, Lucca received a prestigious award known as the Dickin Medal. It’s a significant honor because it’s given to animals for their bravery. Lucca earned this award for her outstanding service and loyalty.

Despite the dangers, on that fateful day in March 2012, she courageously uncovered a weapons cache and successfully neutralized an IED before tragedy struck once more. After the explosion, Cpl. Juan Rodriguez, one of Lucca’s handlers, recalls the tense moments clearly. “The blast was immense, and I immediately feared for Lucca’s safety,” he remembers. “I hurried to her side and saw her struggle to stand. Quickly, I carried her to the shelter of nearby trees, applied a tourniquet to her wounded limb, and called for medical assistance.
A Journey of Recovery of Lucca
Lucca’s journey to recovery was arduous but marked by determination and resilience. Transported from Afghanistan for medical care, she underwent surgery and rehabilitation, astounding her caregivers with her rapid progress. Her unyielding spirit remained unbroken, a testament to her unwavering determination.
Today, Lucca enjoys a peaceful retirement in California, where she continues to inspire others with her tale of courage and perseverance. She fills her days with school visits, community gatherings, and, of course, enjoys plenty of affection and treats.
